Empowering Through Education
At Nuer Makuei International Organization Society (N-MIOS), we believe that education is a powerful tool for restoring dignity, hope, and opportunity. For refugees and displaced people, access to learning not only equips them with knowledge but also provides a path to healing and long-term resilience. Our education initiatives are carefully designed to address the specific challenges faced by these vulnerable groups in camps and rural settlements across Sudan and South Sudan.

Our Approach
Our program takes a comprehensive approach to education. We support formal schooling at all levels—elementary, intermediate, and secondary—ensuring children have access to a continuous and quality learning journey. Adult literacy is also a major priority, enabling older learners to gain basic education and essential life skills. Through vocational training programs, we empower youth and adults with practical skills that can help them generate income, support their families, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. For those who excel, we provide pathways to higher education through scholarship opportunities. Formal Education: Supporting elementary, intermediate, and secondary school levels Adult Literacy: Providing opportunities for adults to gain basic education Vocational Training: Equipping youth and adults with practical skills for employment Higher Education: Offering scholarships for tertiary education Volunteer Teacher Development: Training and deploying qualified volunteer teachers Educational Materials: Supplying books, school uniforms, stationery, and learning tools School Feeding Program: Ensuring students receive at least one nutritious meal per school day Safe Learning Spaces: Renting and rehabilitating buildings for classrooms and learning hubs
To make this possible, N-MIOS works to train and deploy volunteer teachers in the camps. We equip them with the tools and training necessary to deliver effective education despite limited resources. Additionally, we provide essential learning materials such as books, stationery, school uniforms, and teaching aids. Our school feeding program ensures that students receive at least one nutritious meal a day, addressing both hunger and school attendance challenges. We also rent and rehabilitate safe, accessible buildings to be used as classrooms and learning centers.
The core objectives of our education program are to increase enrollment and retention of refugee and displaced children in school, eliminate illiteracy among youth and adults, and foster a culture of learning and inclusion. We place special focus on the education of girls, ensuring gender equality in access to learning. By working closely with the Ministry of Education and other partners, we align our efforts with national policies and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially Goal 4—quality education.
Since the launch of our strategic plan, we have trained over 100 teachers and reached thousands of learners through our school meal and materials distribution programs. Our vocational training projects have expanded to five states, and we continue to build strong partnerships to scale our impact. Every effort is guided by our belief that education is a human right and a powerful force for transformation. You can play a vital role in this mission. By sponsoring a student, donating school supplies, supporting teacher training, or volunteering your time, you can help us break the cycle of displacement and poverty through education. Together, we can rebuild futures and empower the next generation to thrive.
